Police say they are investigating the email, which is being distributed in the region.

On of those receiving the email was Much Wenlock resident Elizabeth Rogers, who said it looked just like an official email from the telecom company, including their logo.

She said: " It looks genuine and has the BT logo and said it was an automated message regarding security.

"It says your BT account info needs validation and the account has been suspended until the information is provided, with a link on the bottom.

"I didn't like it from the start but I did click on the link and sure enough there was a box to fill in your details.

"I've been a BT customer for so long and I thought it wasn't like the company at all."

Mrs Rogers called BT who told her the email was not from them and put her in contact with the Police Fraud Action Team.

Chris Ammonds, a spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: "We can confirm this has been reported to us.

"As with any emails of this sort people should not respond and not give out their details.

"If they have any concerns about the nature of any email they should ring the origin company."
