Man rescued from fire at Telford flats
A man was rescued from the top floor of a block of flats in Telford after rubbish was set on fire on the stairs.
Firefighters arrived at Hadrian Flats, in Kings Haye Road, Wellington, to find the man, who is in his 60s, hanging out of his window and shouting for help as thick smoke poured into his flat.
Officers entered with breathing apparatus and were able to escort him out of the building safely.
He was given on the spot treatment for smoke inhalation.
Another man in his 40s managed to escape the blaze by jumping out of his ground-floor window.
The fire happened at about 9.30pm last night.
Two appliances from Wellington and another from Telford attended.
Watch manager Craig Jackson said: "On arrival there was a lot of smoke pouring from all four floors. It turned out to be rubbish in the communal stairway which was on fire.
"We sent in two breathing apparatus with a hose and dealt with the fire. They then made their way up the stairs to find the man's flat was filled with smoke. We escorted him out.
"He had some inhalation and was given smoke therapy at the scene."
Firefighters made sure that everyone else in the block of flats was safe.
Mr Jackson said the cause of the fire was still under investigation.
Damage to the flat was limited to the front door, Mr Jackson said. The rescued man was unable to return to his flat at first.
Volunteers from The British Red Cross were able to help him and he was told he could return inside later in the night.
