Donnington Medical Practice in Wrekin Drive is now open to patients, following a major development which started in July 2012.

The practice was previously housed in an outdated single-storey building dating back to the 1960s and was described as "unfit for purpose" for its 13,000 registered patients.

The new facility has undergone a total modernisation with new consulting rooms for the practice's eight GPs, CCG treatment rooms, a minor operations suite and a pharmacy.

It has been designed with a flexible layout which will be able to accommodate changes in medical procedures.

In the entrance, there is now a mosaic depicting local history, made by members of the Patient Participation Group.

The work on the practice was overseen by Birmingham-based chartered surveyors Johnson Fellows.

Andrew Rowson, building consultancy at the company, said the new site now benefits from a pedestrian access to Queens Road Consulting Rooms, which is also operated by Donnington Medical Practice, as well as 90 car parking spaces between both sites.

The new practice covers 20,000 square feet over two stories and was designed by Andrew McPhee.

The work itself was done by builders A&H Construction and Developments PLC, who had to overcome a number of challenges during the work, , including the safe removal of asbestos, preserving an historic underground culvert, and ensuring the old building remained open to the public while new work went ahead.

"The modern practice offers superb facilities for the local community and we are very pleased with how the project progressed," said Andrew. "We are grateful to the patients and staff who had to bear with us during the works of the two-stage development but we hope they can now appreciate the modern practice."

Bryan Henshall, business manager for Donnington Medical Practice, said: "We are thrilled with the new facility – it is fit for purpose and will enable us to offer first-class medical care in modern surroundings to our patients."
