The man had to be rescued from the water at Ellesmere after emergency services received a 999 call at 6.30pm yesterday.
Steve Parry, of the West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "A man in his 40s was rescued from the water and found to be in respiratory arrest."
The man was airlifted to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for further treatment.
The weekly swim training sessions are organised by the Ellesmere-based Trismart organisation which has a safety boat on the water during the swim.
Last night was the second session of the season.
