After 40 years, brewing is returning to Wellington
It's been more than 40 years since beer was last produced in the heart of Wellington . . . but that's all about to change.
The Ironbridge Brewery, makers of award-winning tipples such as Ironbridge Gold, is relocating to a new site, just yards from where the old Wrekin Brewery was based in the 1960s.
It's part of a major expansion for the company which will create new jobs, and also bring Wellington's former Pheasant Inn back to life. It has been a busy week for the brewery. Not only have staff been relocating their equipment from Ironbridge to the new base, their pub in Oakengates, The Old Fighting Cocks, was presented with another award from the Campaign For Real Ale.
Dave Goldingay, managing director of the brewery, said the company planned to sink a borehole into the same water source used by the old Wrekin Brewery.
"I think people will like the idea of brewing returning to Market Street, although I don't think many people can really remember what the beer tasted like.
"Wellington is still a vibrant market town, and we want to capitalise on that."
