Extensive work – mostly off road - is currently taking place in the Newport area to create National Cycle Network 55.

Telford and Wrekin currently has 106 miles of off road cycling facilities and this will be increased even further when the NCN 55 project is completed.

The route is already ready for use from where the A518 meets the A41 in Newport and to the Staffordshire border.

Work is currently in progress on the section of path alongside the A518 by the Red House pub.

The footpath is being widened to at least 2.5 metres.

Work on the path south of the Red House is due to be completed in March 2015.

Councillor Liz Clare, cabinet member for leisure services and culture, said: "We are committed to further developing our designated cycle network in Telford and Wrekin to make it as easy as possible for people to get about the borough on their bikes.

"This new link will enable anyone in Telford to cycle to and from Staffordshire very easily and I look forward to it being completed.

"Cycling is a fantastic way to travel – it is healthy, environmentally friendly and a great way to see the countryside and I would encourage everyone to get on their bikes in the coming summer months."

The project is costing £200,000 and has been funded by the Department for Transport to enable sustainable forms of travel.h
