Fears housing scheme will cause traffic chaos
More than 100 houses and a retirement village on the outskirts of a Shropshire town would cause havoc on nearby roads, according to councillors.
Newport Town Council has objected to plans for 111 houses and a 108-unit retirement village off Stafford Road at the A41 junction.
The development has been put forward by Taylor Wimpey and land owner David Brierley. The town council supported the original plans, which were for a 222-unit retirement complex.
Developers say that houses had to be added to the development to make it financially viable.
Lee Jakeman, on clerk of the town council, said: "This further proposal is considered a step too far. The impact on the highway and traffic movement is of concern, as well as the close proximity to the A518, the A41 by-pass and the current residential area of Daniels Cross, Hampton Drive and the wider housing estates to the east side of town, which are currently considered to be part of the busiest routes for commuters.
"This will require further consideration and investment with the introduction of a further 219 dwellings in this area."
More than 1,000 houses have already been given the go-ahead in Newport, though little work has yet started.
Residents and councillors have expressed their concerns about a sudden boom in the town's population and the effect that could have on roads and services, including doctors and schools.
