£800k civic centre refurbishment sparks mixed responses from residents
A civic centre in Shropshire has been officially re-opened following a facelift costing more than £800,000.
The Whitchurch Civic Centre was opened by MP for North Shropshire Owen Paterson, mayor of Whitchurch Rob Hewson, Shropshire Councillor Gerald Dakin, and Shropshire Council Commissioning manager Neil Willcox.
The event attracted more than 100 people
As well as the facade of the building, the interior has been remodelled to create a more attractive reception, as well as upgrading the heating, water and electrical systems.
Council workers in the building say that the change has come with open arms.
Jan Round, tourist information assistant for Whitchurch Town Council, said: "It will be different to what we're used to, but definitely better."
Chris Westwood, customer service manager, said the staff were now equipped to provide much more support to the community.
He said the centre now featured public telephones, as well as two public computers, and anyone can get support on how to use them.
"It will become clear where the money has gone when people see what is going on here," he said.
"I don't like the phrase, but it will really become a one-stop-shop for the community."
Before unveiling a commemorative plaque, Mr Paterson praised the new look venue.
"I think to describe the original 1970s building as 'tired' would be polite. What we have now is a massive improvement," he said.
"I regularly use the centre for surgeries and I am always struck by the great variety of different things going on here, so it is good to see a centre that can accommodate these.
"I would offer many congratulations to everyone involved."
Mr Willcox, who thanked all those who worked on the project, said that he hoped the public would be pleased with the finished build.
"I hope you think that what we have achieved here is money well spent, time well spent, and that in six or 12 months you will appreciate and value the space," he said.
"I also hope you come to see this as something of a second home, or maybe even a first home."
The project was criticised after it fell more than eight weeks behind schedule and £120,000 over budget.
But Councillor Hewson said: "I would like to thank the public for their patience.
"I have much hope that you will continue to utilise the space and see the improved facilities."
He also presented fellow town councillor John Sinnott with a clock to thank him for his efforts with the refurbishment.
