Shrewsbury street festival hailed a success
A popular community street festival in Shrewsbury has been hailed a huge success by organisers.
Bosses at youth arts charity The Hive, which is based in Belmont in Shrewsbury, organised the event which was held earlier this month. They say the festival, which was held for the fourth time, beat previous records.
Habib Malik-Mansell, from The Hive, said: "The aim of the Hive's street festival each year is to provide a fun day for families and people of all ages to enjoy.
"Attractions this year included the return of the Maypole, performances from emerging musicians such as Not Completely Blonde and Beth Prior, plus a Henna artist and a DJ. There were various stalls and trade-stands - plus lots of interactive sessions and activities for young people, with crafts, headband making and arts.
"Refreshments were provided by the team from neighbouring Eat-Up of Milk Street - and people also benefitted from the chance to participate in face-painting, beauty treatments and even a couple of classic vehicles which joined the event this year. Another particular highlight was a military pipe and drumming band, from the Royal Irish Regiment based at Tern Hill - and their performance was extremely well-received by lots of people.
"Attendance was on a similar level to last year, with more than 1,000 people of all ages visiting and participating throughout the course of the afternoon. The weather held off too, remaining dry right until the end.
"Once again, it was positive to see so many people coming along to support the event. It definitely appears to have become an annual event in the diaries of lots of local residents - and we always love seeing the spectrum of ages that attend and interact."
