Fun in the sun for Shropshire
Thousands of people headed out into this weekend's glorious sunshine as events were given a boost by the weather.
Temperatures soared to up to 22C (72F) as Shropshire enjoyed the hottest day of the year so far, with conditions warmer than Athens, Rome and Barcelona.
It prompted record crowds to turn out to events including the mayor's parade in Shrewsbury.
Ice cream sellers in the Quarry park did a roaring trade, while many of the town's outdoor cafes and bars enjoyed brisk business.
Yesterday, the town's newest mayor Beverley Baker donned her robes to parade through the streets with former mayors, dignitaries, officials and civic leaders.
The procession, which included hundreds of youngsters, went through Castle Street, Pride Hill, Shoplatch, Bellstone, St John's Hill and St Chad's Terrace.
The streets through the town were lined with young and old alike who applauded as the procession, led by Shrewsbury Brass Band, made its way through to the church for a civic service, where the mayor was officially sworn in.
After the service the traditional Loving Cup ceremony took place, at which the Mayor was invited to drink from the Loving Cup and toast the Queen and town.
Carol Pullen, mayor's secretary, said: "It was a really beautiful day, although I think the dignitaries and officials felt very hot in their robes. But the church was full and it was a great day fro Shrewsbury."
Dilwyn Jones, owner of Sabrina Boats, which operate along the River Severn from the mooring at Victoria Quay, said the sun had certainly made an impression on the number of visitors to his craft.
"We have 500 over 12 trips during the two days, which was wonderful," said Dilwyn.
Britain was today making the most of the sunshine while it lasts – with temperatures set to fall and rain on the way tomorrow.
Temperatures were today expected to reach highs of 26C (78F) in the south east, while in Shropshire the mercury was peaking at Shawbury at 23C (73F).
