Man to the rescue as Newport attacker punches teenager in the head

A good samaritan saw off an attacker who punched a teenager in the head in Newport High Street.

Police are now trying to trace the member of the public who intervened and helped the injured 18-year-old.

The assault happened between 2.30am and 3am yesterday, when the young man was grabbed from behind, pulled to the ground and punched several times to the head.

But the offender, who was with a larger group of men, fled when a passer-by intervened and assisted the injured man.

Police are now urging the good samaritan to make contact and also appealing for other witnesses or information which may help the investigation.

The investigating officer, Police Constable Lee Thomas, said: "The 18-year-old was set upon in the lower part of Newport High Street, near the Buttercross and St Nicholas's church.

"He suffered a bloodied nose and graze to the head and was treated by paramedics at the scene."

Pc Thomas added: "An unknown man wearing a red T-shirt intervened, causing the offender to run from the scene, and then assisted the victim before police and ambulance staff arrived."

Police are keen to speak to the witness and urge him to contact Wellington or Malinsgate police station on 101 quoting incident reference is 0095S180514.
