Part of a large tree had fallen, blocking both ways until about 10pm when it was cleared.

Elsewhere, Shropshire was hit by a summer thunderstorm after a three-day heatwave.

Lightning crackled through the skies over Whitchurch last night and storms shook Oswestry, while dark skies and heavy rain hit Shrewsbury.

Shifnal and Albrighton police officers took to Twitter to let motorists know about the closure caused by the fallen tree.

At 8.30pm @ShifnalCops tweeted a picture of the tree:

Then at 10pm they tweeted: "Stanton Road now open after tree cleared from the highway."
