The A483 between Newtown and Welshpool was shut in both directions from 6pm after structural damage was caused to the road. Police said a section of road had collapsed and that the road would be shut for at least 24 hours - causing potential disruption for people heading towards the mid Wales coast on holidays over the bank holiday weekend.

The cracks appeared in the road by the sewage works at Glan Hafren where roadworks being carried out. Traffic had to be diverted along the A490 which eased the congestion.

It is not yet known what caused the cracks to appear.

A Dyfed-Powys Police spokesman said: "There is a problem with the road surface after part of it collapsed.

"Diversions are in place and it is likely to be closed for 24 hours."

Councillor Val Howard, who sits on Newtown Town Council, said: "This is bound to cause chaos while it's closed, because we already have chaos in Newtown.

"But with the bank holiday traffic this could be a nightmare."

The roadworks where the collapse happened started on May 1 and were planned to be finished by June 24.
