The A483 between Newtown and Welshpool was shut at 6pm on Friday after a section of the road collapsed, close to where ongoing roadworks are being carried out by the sewage works at Glan Hafren.

There were fears it would cause disruption for people heading towards the mid Wales coast on holidays over the bank holiday weekend as traffic was diverted onto the A490, but the collapse was repaired within 24 hours.

The road reopened at about 4pm on Saturday. It is not yet known what caused the collapse.

Joy Jones, Powys county councillor for Newtown East said today: "I've driven across it this morning and they've done a great job.

"Traffic was flowing lovely this morning and Newtown is not congested for the bank holiday.

"They had to put hardcore under it and it looks like a solid bit of road.

"I want to say a big thank you to Powys County Council who had to man the roads. They did a tremendous job in terrible weather."

She said the Welsh Government should also be commended for taking such swift action.

Shes said it was still a temporary road surface and traffic lights remained at the Glan Hafren roadworks which have been in progress since May 1, due to be finished by June 24.
