Newport caravan site expansion approved

Controversial plans to almost double the size of a caravan site in Newport have been approved.

A further 13 mobile homes will be added to Kings Head Caravan Park off Green Lane after the plans were given the green light by Telford & Wrekin Council.

The site, near the town centre, currently has 15 mobile homes and the additional 13 homes will replace space for nine touring caravans.

The owners of the site, Jean and Samuel Smith, say that the new mobile homes will be ideal for older people wishing to live in Newport.

In 2006 an application for five additional mobile homes was rejected over concerns about additional traffic on the nearby roads, including Green Lane and Chetwynd End.

The latest proposals received objections from Newport Town Council and a handful of neighbours.

But the current residents of Kings Head signed a petition in support of the expansion.

The homes will be put around the edge of the site so that the centre remains green for residents to use.

Each new unit will have an on-site parking space, and there is also a visitor parking area.

Seven small trees will have to be removed to make way for the buildings, but the mature lime and horse chestnut trees will be kept.

Some planting will take place to replace the trees which are removed.

Plans for 85 houses on an adjacent field off Edgmond Road have already been approved.

Bovis Homes has now bought the site and has now submitted a more detailed planning application to the local authority.
