The streets were lined with spectators as the carnival procession left Berriew Street to wind through the town centre on its way to the Maesydre playing fields.

There the star of the show, a huge robot Titan, entertained children and adults alike with his antics on the playing fields.

Welshpool Carnival committee secretary Trish Hodges said the day had been very successful - and that everyone involved had been very lucky with the weather.

She said: "We must thank everyone who supported the carnival, all those worked so hard to make it a success and all those who came along on the day. It has been great fun and everyone appears to have had a great time."

The carnival had to be cancelled in 2012 when its traditional date coincided with the Queen's Jubilee weekend.

But organisers who the momentum will now continue for future years following yesterday's success.

Miss Hodges said: "We could not find another date that year so we had not alternative but to not hold it that year. But it is well and truly back on track now."

Montgomeryshire MP Glyn Davies helped to judge the carnival floats.

He said: "Procession around town led by brilliant 'samba' band in glorious sunshine. Welshpool could be mistaken for Rio."
