Telford Railfreight open day to entice firms
Business leaders will be invited to view Telford's ill-fated Railfreight Park in an attempt to revive the facility.
The £7.75m International Railfreight Park in Donnington, Telford, was expected to handle four trains a day when it opened in 2009.
But the terminal has fallen short of that target and has been branded a "white elephant" by opponents.
DB Schenker took charge of the facility last year - and an open day has now been arranged to try to entice new users.
Eric Carter, a Telford & Wrekin councillor and also a member of the Shropshire, Telford and the Marches Strategic Rail Group, said: "People have been saying that nothing is happening with the terminal.
"With my background in shipping for 30 years I have been pushing DB Schenker for a meeting.
"We met last week and it was very positive.
"They are determined to make the operation work and they've agreed to hold an open day for businesses to come and look at the terminal and its facilities.
"There are opportunities with various bulk goods like coal, grit and gravel."
Councillor Carter said some large containers cannot be transported on the line because of overhead cables.
But he said: "I believe it can work. I am going to make sure that this remains at the forefront of Telford & Wrekin Council's plans for the future.
"It takes vehicles off the road and reduces pollution.
"I believe we should be making the most of the opportunity."
