The big top has gone up, the animals have been groomed and clowns have been put through their paces.

Zippos Circus is now ready to welcome thousands of visitors through its doors in Shrewsbury for the first time. The globally-renowned clown family will open its five-day run tonight at The Quayside.

Circus "aristocracy" The Rastellis, who have not appeared in Britain since the 1970s, will be performing with Zippos for the first time at The Quarry.

It has not all run smoothly after one of the Zippos lorries got stuck yesterday and brought traffic to a standstill in Shrewsbury.

Spokesman Chris Barltrop said: "This is the first time we have visited Shrewsbury and we're all very pleased to be here.

"We're delighted with the bookings so far and the big top can hold 1,100 people, so we're hoping for some big crowds."
