Alcohol will be sold at Newport Carnival for the first time in 20 years, organisers announced today.

Organisers have managed to secure a temporary licence to sell booze on Shuker Field during the popular annual event on June 14.

Irene Whittington, one of the organisers, said the move followed requests from carnival-goers.

She said: "We wanted to get a licence last year but we didn't get the clearance until the last minute and then it was too late in the day.

"But we are really pleased that it's all come together this time.

"Every year so many people come up and ask us where the bar is.

"We'll see how much it is supported this year and then take it from there.

"There will be security provided by the pub and there certainly won't be any under-age drinking."

The bar will be fenced off from the rest of the entertainment and will be manned by carnival volunteers. Soft drinks will also be available.

The bar was removed from the carnival in the late 1980s because of trouble on the field.

But Mrs Whittington said things have changed significantly since then, with pubs in the town now able to stay open all day and for longer hours.

About 5,000 people are expected to turn out for the 42nd annual Newport Carnival.

People will line High Street to watch the floats pass by before moving en masse to Shuker Field, where there will be entertainment and games into the early evening.

For a third year, entry onto Shuker Field will be free of charge.

Mrs Whittington said: "We have a full programme of events and the committee has worked really hard to make sure there is something for everyone.

"Everything is all set for another great day. The carnival is a vital part of Newport's heritage."

The carnival costs about £11,000 to put on with organisers relying on bucket collections, advertising and grants.
