Anger at plans for more than 80 new homes in Shropshire village

Village life would be ruined if plans for more than 80 houses get the go-ahead, a resident has claimed.

Up to 84 homes could be built in Rodington, between Wellington and Shrewsbury, over the next 17 years under Telford & Wrekin Council's blueprint for future development.

That would mean the village would roughly double in size.

Consultation has now begun on the council's Shaping Places document, which earmarks 80 sites for 8,000 new homes across the borough.

It includes plans for 33 houses at Fairways, Rodington Heath, and a further 50 houses on land to the rear of Elmlea in Rodington.

Alan Morris, of Southolme, Rodington, said the village was unsuitable for so many houses.

He said: "This is more than any village can realistically absorb.

"It is likely that most of these houses will have two cars, probably doing two journeys each most days, therefore meaning over 1,000 extra journeys per week on totally unsuitable and poorly maintained roads, particularly towards Telford where they are almost permanently flooded in the winter.

"The density of these proposals at about 16 to the acre would be ridiculously out of character in a village environment, particularly at the Fairways site which is bounded on three sides mainly by bungalows.

"This density would be more suited to town and city developments where there are bus services, safe pedestrian access to shops, schools and other facilities and street lights."

Mr Morris said that large-scale farming now dominated Rodington and that had brought with it large tractors on the roads.

He added: "I cannot understand why anyone would want to come to live in a village like Rodington with very limited amenities unless they could, at least, have a reasonable sized garden.

"They won't really live here, they will just sleep and commute."

The council said that it had a target of 20,000 new homes by 2031.

Councillor Charles Smith, cabinet member for housing and development, said there were 11,885 homes with planning permission, so about 8,000 were needed to meet the target.

He added: "We need to ensure that Telford is an attractive place to live, work and play in and attractive to tourists too.

"This blueprint shows how we are going to do all of these things."

Consultation on the proposed sites continues until 5pm on June 17.
