Painting and decorating apprentice Sam Clorley, 25, from Wem, has been named the winner of the South and City heat for Dulux Decorator Centres' Apprentice of the Year competition.

Having completed a skills based challenge, the Shrewsbury College student is now set to compete against nine other finalists at New College Durham, County Durham, on June 10 and 11.

Mr Clorley said: "I'm absolutely delighted to have come first and, although it was challenging, I really enjoyed the opportunity to take part.

"I'm now focused on the final and even though I know it will be tough, it's just great to take part."

The challenge saw Mr Clorley combine his knowledge of wallpapering, stencilling, glossing and other effects in a practical work piece.

For winning the heat, he bagged £100 worth of Dulux Decorator Centres vouchers, and received a certificate and a goody bag full of decorating materials donated by suppliers.

College lecturer Barry Mason said: "We're really proud of Sam and it's great that he's representing the college and heading for the final. The standard was really high and his skills were put fully to the test.

"This is a great opportunity for our students to showcase their talent and take part in a well-organised and professional competition and I'm looking forward to the final."

The competition is now in its seventh year, and encourages painting and decorating apprentices push their skills to be named Apprentice of the Year.

If Mr Clorley is successful in the final, which involves another practical task, he could be awarded £1000 prize money at a presentation evening at Lumley Castle, in Durham.
