Traffic was able to use the A4169 Sheinton Street in Much Wenlock from 6am after engineers for Severn Trent water worked over the weekend to get repairs to a sewer pipe finished.

The road, which links the town to Ironbridge and Telford, has been closed since last Tuesday to allow the work to take place and diversions have been put in place. It was originally hoped the work would be completed last Friday, but it had been feared the work would spill over into today and disrupt morning rush hour traffic.

Motorists using the area were warned to be wary of some equipment at the scene which was being removed later today.

Shops and businesses have remained open during the road closure, and people living on Sheinton Street have been able to access their homes.

Lorna Perry, spokeswoman for Shropshire Council, said: "The road was opening at 6am to help those commuting or taking children to school.

"There is some equipment that cannot be moved immediately still at the scene, so we would urge people driving in the area to take care."

Victoria Brown, spokeswoman for Severn Trent Water, said the work had been delayed. She apologised for any inconvenience caused.
