Shoppers dive for cover as car smashes into Telford shop
[gallery] Staff and late-night shoppers dived for cover when a car left the road and ploughed through the front of a Telford convenience store.
The driver involved in the drama in Haybridge Road, Hadley, was left suffering from shock but he also escaped injury.
The smash happened at Julies Convenience Store, just yards from where nine-year-old Jayden-Lee McIvor was knocked down and killed on a pedestrian crossing last year.
Staff at the shop were just locking up at about 8pm last night when the latest drama happened.
Store owner Julie Duhra said: "I didn't actually witness the crash because I had gone to lock up. When I got back I found this car inside the shop.
"There were two male shop assistants in at the time and three customers who were about to leave.
"All of them were so lucky they weren't hurt.
"It was only 16 months ago that young Jayden was killed nearby.
"Youngsters often hang around in front of my shop and again we were very lucky no-one was there last night.
"A repairman from Door Doctor stayed with us until the early hours of this morning ensuring the shop was secure and we were open for business as usual again today, even though there has been a lot of damage.
"It has been a real community effort to get everything fixed up and to keep the shop going."
Telford police spokesman Chris Ammonds said police and an ambulance crew were called to the scene at 8.05 last night.
He said: "A car driven by a man had gone straight into a shop in Haybridge Road but thankfully no-one was injured, although there was quite a lot of damage.
"The driver did not require hospital treatment and no arrest was made or charges brought. It was left as a damage-only road traffic collision."
Jayden died on February 2 last year when he was struck by a car at a pelican crossing in Haybridge Road.
The car driver involved Raja Khan,19, of Leegomery, Telford, was subsequently given three years' detention at Shrewsbury Crown Court after admitting dangerous driving.
