The 19-year-old achieved national fame through his bravery after being diagnosed with terminal cancer aged 15.

More than £4 million has been raised for the Teenage Cancer Trust through donations by supporters of Stephen across Britain and beyond, both before and after his death last month.

Friends Angie Evans and Pauline Oldroyd, from Shawbirch, were touched by the story of the teenager from Burntwood, Staffordshire, and wanted to celebrate his life.

Ms Evans, a childminder said: "I've fundraised for charities most years and this year we were both touched by the story of Stephen Sutton and we wanted to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

"He said he wanted people to celebrate not mourn so this is an ideal celebration - a party to raise money for his cause."

The rags or riches ball will be held at the Park Inn in Madeley on July 5 from 7.30pm until 12.30am.

"It's dress up or dress down whatever makes you happy," said Ms Evans, from Leese Close.

"There will be a bucks fizz reception, a three-course meal, live band Salty Hogg, a DJ auction and raffle.

"We've got fantastic prizes. On December 10 last year there was a charity match to celebrate 150 years of the Football Association. Present players and music stars signed a shirt and they've given it to us.

"It's been signed by Olly Murs, Michael Owen and Rizzle Kicks and it comes with a certificate of authenticity from the FA.

"There's a three-day car hire and we've got vouchers for service and MOT and perfume.

"We are really looking forward to it. The band is brilliant. They're coming over from North Wales and they play music from the 60s up to the present day.

"They have a bit of fun with the crowd to get everyone involved."

She asked anyone who would like to give to the auction to get in touch and urged people to book tables of six, eight and 10 in advance to avoid disappointment.

Tickets, which can be delivered, are available by calling Angie on 07866 360350 or Pauline on 07989 191246.
