Two paramedics and the van driver were taken to hospital with minor injuries following the crash near Welshpool.

The ambulance was not responding to an emergency call at the time and had no patients on board.

Nobody suffered serious injuries, but the Welsh Ambulance Service said the ambulance was now undergoing a full examination.

The collision happened on the A458 at Neuadd Bridge, near Welshpool at 6.21pm on Monday.

Welsh Ambulance Service spokeswoman Lois Hough said: "We received a call at 6.21pm on Monday following reports of a road traffic collision involving an ambulance and a van on the A458 Neuadd Bridge, Welshpool.

"Two rapid response vehicles, an emergency ambulance and a BASICS doctor and an air ambulance attended the scene.

"Two paramedics on the ambulance and the driver of the van were taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. Their injuries are not believed to be serious."

Miss Hough added: "There were no patients on board the ambulance at the time of the collision and the ambulance has since been recovered for examination."

Dyfed-Powys Police and Mid & West Wales Fire and Rescue Service also attended the incident.

The crash happened a day after a motorcyclist was killed on the same road.

Melanie Roseanne Lakin, 29, died when the motorcycle she was riding collided with a car which had stopped as part of a police road block.

Miss Lakin had been visiting Bala Lake with her boyfriend Oliver and was involved in the collision on her way home to Tamworth, in Staffordshire.
