The yellow vehicle is understood to have broken down while being driven through water which had pooled under a railway bridge in Albrighton.

Newport Road had to be closed for a number of hours near to RAF Cosford just off the A41, while a rescue operation got under way to move the lorry.

Warning signs were placed in the area to advise drivers to use an alternative route yesterday.

And as the rain ceased and the sun came out in the afternoon, the flooding was expected to subside to allow the road to be reopened.

Although the torrential rain drenched the county yesterday morning but grey clouds gave way to glorious sunshine for the rest of the afternoon.

The stark contrast in conditions created a damp and muggy atmosphere as temperatures rose to 20C (68F), as recorded at the RAF Shawbury weather station.

The Newport Road is a frequent victim to flash flooding caused by torrential rain, with water collecting under the railway bridge.

Around half an inch of rain fell in just an hour yesterday, causing traffic on main routes including the M54 to reduce to a crawl.

More heavy rain showers were expected in some areas today, although forecasters say many parts of Shropshire and Mid wales may have a dry day.

And they say the weather will improve through the week, with the warmest temperatures of the year so far promised for Thursday, when it will reach up to 25C (77F) in some areas.
