Woman jailed after she stabbed man with knife in Telford
A woman stabbed a man with an eight-inch kitchen knife after drinking 20 cans of lager and smoking cannabis, a court heard.
Katasha Bushell was jailed for 10 months for her attack on Jamie Humphries at a house in Telford.
Judge Robin Onions, sitting at Shrewsbury Crown Court, said he had no option but to put 20-year-old Bushell behind bars to send out a strong message about the consequences of knife crime.
Mr Phillip Beardwell, prosecuting, said Bushell stabbed Mr Humphries after he tried to intervene in a fight between her and another woman.
The trouble broke out at Octavia Court in Lancaster Avenue, Dawley, in January.
Mr Beardwell said Mr Humphries had been visiting his girlfriend at the block and had drunk a bottle of vodka himself when he heard two women fighting and tried to break it up.
He said: "She produced a kitchen knife.
"In his own intoxicated state he did not think anything was going to happen and, perhaps with the benefit of Dutch courage, he said 'if you are going to do something, do it'. She did – she stabbed him just above the hip." Mr Humphries was lucky to suffer just a minor injury that required stitches.
Bushell was arrested and told police she was "all over the place".
Bushell, of Shawfield Close, Sutton Hill, admitted assault causing actual bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon at a previous hearing. Judge Onions said he had no option but to send Bushell to a young offenders institution.
He said: "I have to pass a sentence that acts as a warning to others. Carrying knives is dangerous and blights people's lives."
