Welshpool one-way system is a 'killer' claims councillor

A town's  controversial road system will "kill someone" unless urgent action is taken to scrap it, a councillor has claimed.

Welshpool's one-way system is an accident waiting to happen, with motorists still continuing to drive the wrong way, despite it being in place since February 2011, Councillor Ann Holloway said.

The Welshpool county and town councillor said she was left shaking on her walking frame after a near miss on the junction of Jehu Road earlier this week and had also witnessed a near miss between cars going the wrong way in Church Street.

She has now called on changes approved by the Montgomeryshire Committee of Powys County Council last year to be implemented as soon as possible.

She said: "Someone has to stand up and be counted now and take urgent action against this shambolic road system.

"If they don't, someone will be killed by a car sooner rather than later. It is desperate and I am hoping to speak to Montgomeryshire MP Glyn Davies to get things back to how they were.

"I am sick and tired of hearing about how close we have been to catastrophic incidents and it is because of the changes made."

She said that businesses had closed in the town since the system was brought in and claimed it was putting tourists off visiting the town.

She said: "I know of businessmen who have shut up shop and people used to stop here while on the way to the coast from Shropshire.

"Why would they bother now, it is such a hassle getting through the town."

She added that she will now be speaking to the county council, Highways Agency and Mr Davies to see what steps can be taken.
