Extra time in scheme to buy historic former Telford cinema

A project to buy an iconic former cinema building in Telford has extended its scheme to allow people to buy shares.

Save the Clifton needs to raise £500,000 to turn the building into a new community arts centre.

The deadline to buy shares was June 10, but only £25,000 has been purchased so far. People now have until December to sign up.

Hundreds of people have already backed the campaign to restore the 1930s art-deco building in Wellington, Telford, which closed as a cinema in the 1980s.

It has since has been used as a supermarket and Dunelm Mill store since then, but has stood empty since Dunelm moved out two years ago.

The volunteers behind the project are urging local people and organisations to back the plans by pledging money.

The project team set up a community benefit society, the Clifton Community Arts Centre Ltd, which made 500,000 shares available for sale.

They cost £1 each, with a minimum investment of £10 and a maximum of £100,000.

They are available through the group's website www.theclifton.org or by post, or in person at a weekly stall the society has at Wellington Market every Saturday.
