Teenage boys are now said to be spending as much on their school prom outfits as girls do.
A poll of teenagers aged 16 to 19 revealed an average of £348 is spent on a girl's dress, transport and pampering sessions for the end of term bash.
But the rise of male beauty treatments such as tans and facials means the overall cost of a son's summer ball came out at only £12 less.
Jules Heptonstall of St Tropez, which commissioned the survey, said: "It's very stylish now among young adults to look particularly glamorous on a night out.
"This especially applies for the end-of-school ball where they will want to impress their peers.
"For many teens this will be the most important night of their school career, so feeling they look great is a big deal. After all, confidence is key to dancing and having a good time."
The research revealed while the dress or suit is the major expense, increasingly extensive beauty regimes are also draining the bank account.
Primping and preening in advance of the ball costs parents an average of £120 for girls and amazingly, as much as £117.50 for the boys.
