Police said it is believed the cyclist may have been involved in a collision with a vehicle that failed to stop.

The cyclist, believed to be a 61-year-old man from Bayston Hill, near Shrewsbury, was found on a grass verge at about 5am near Dorrington and a bicycle was found nearby.

He was found by a tractor driver.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "It is believed the cyclist may have been involved in a collision with another vehicle that failed to stop following the incident. West Mercia Police are urging this driver to get in contact."

Around 10 miles of the A49 between Shrewsbury and Church Stretton, have been closed as investigations continue.

Two ambulances and a paramedic support officer were sent to the scene after a 999 call.

Jamie Arrowsmith, West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman, said: "On arrival, crews found a man lying on a grass verge with a bicycle nearby.

"Sadly, it quickly became apparent to ambulance staff that nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead at the scene."

Meanwhile, Shropshire Council reported that a separate accident happened on a diversion route set up following the A49 incident.

The A458 Shrewsbury Road in Cressage was closed but has since re-opened. There were no serious injuries.
