Ruth Bates, one of the team behind the Llanfair Caereinion carnival, estimated that more than 1,000 people had packed in to the town on Saturday.

"It was fantastic," she said. "It was a real success, with people lining the streets."

Carnival Queen Amy Evans and her eight attendees arrived into the town at midday aboard the Llanfair to Welshpool Light Railway, where they joined the procession through the town to the Mount Field.

This year's carnival had an American theme, and the procession featured nine floats with themes such as diners and Nasa, as well as Elvis, Mickey Mouse, walking fancy dress groups and Porthywaen Silver band and the Llanidloes Dragonette dancers.

"I would say there were over 1,000 people," said Ms Bates. "The streets were so packed. They were lined six deep around the pavements."

Afternoon activities on the Mount Field included entertainment from Llanfair Caereinion YFC, Powys Dance, Llanfair Gymnastics Club and Elvis impersonator Karl Memphis.

There was also a funfair, craft stalls, a bouncy castle and rodeo rides.

Ms Bates added. "Judging by the comments everyone had a fantastic day."
