Shrewsbury man who attacked stranger is jailed for two years
A serial batterer who launched an unprovoked attack on a stranger outside a Shrewbury bar, leaving him with a bleed on the brain, has been jailed for two years.
Luke Kershaw, 24, punched victim James Granger three times in the face outside Vodka Source Bar, causing him to fall backwards and hit his head, Shrewsbury Crown Court heard.
Mr Granger woke up in hospital and was transferred to a specialist unit where he spent eight days.
He now suffers "long term problems" including memory loss and slurred speech and cannot work.
Kershaw, of Whitchurch Road, Shrewsbury, admitted assault.
His criminal record for a string of batteries was revealed when the judge, Recorder Adrienne Lucking QC, jailing him for two years said the case was "not an isolated incident" and it was "too serious" to suspend the sentence.
Mr Robert Edwards, prosecuting, said: "The defendant punched him to the left side of his face three times in quick succession. That caused Mr Granger's legs to go from under him. He was propelled backwards landing on his back."
Mr Edwards added: "In police interview, Kershaw is shown the CCTV. He says he hasn't got a clue as to why the confrontation takes place. He concludes the interview by saying what he had done was wrong."
Mr Andrew Holland, defending, said: "Going back to the time of the offence he had been made unemployed."
