The event usually attracts more than 3,000 people to Bowring Park, and organisers saw similar numbers on Saturday.

The carnival began with a fun fair on Friday.

Saturday's carnival fun began with a parade winding through the town's streets from 12.45pm, followed by a range of activities in the park from 1pm.

Shropshire MEP Jill Seymour performed her first official duties in the county since her election by officially declaring Wellington Carnival open. She was joined by Karen Tomlinson, Mayor of Wellington.

Entry to the park cost just one penny.

Bands and singers performed on stage, and there were also displays of boxing, Zumba, gymnastics and dance in the main arena.

Joan Jones, an organiser of Wellington Carnival, said:

"There seemed to be more people there than on previous occasions. Everyone seemed happy with the entertainment and stalls.

"During the afternoon we had a few bands playing. "
