Welshpool is making plans for its Welsh Crazy Golf Championships.

And it today said there would be a prize pot that falls a little short of the Open Championship but will still be handy to have in the pocket.

The event will be held on Bank Holiday Monday, August 25, with the town's Church Street car park set to be the venue.

Councillor John Morgan, of Welshpool Town Council member, said he was looking forward to welcoming crazy golfers from far and wide.

And anyone can take part, in return for a £10 entry fee.

He said: "It will be a specially constructed professional course. Certificates and trophies will be awarded to the top four, while first, second and third places will also receive cash prizes."

Councillor Morgan added the winner will also get the chance to take part in the World Crazy Golf Championships, being held in Hastings, Sussex ,over the weekend of October 25 and 26.

The championship was first held in Newport, South Wales in 2010 and has gained a cult following in the last four years.

Robert Robinson, town clerk, said he hoped the event would be a boost to the town's events calendar and to the local economy.
