Welshpool Magistrates Court heard that Gayle Joanne Rowe, 38, set out on April 10 to drive to the shop but crashed when she served to avoid a squirrel.

Mrs Helen Tench, prosecuting yesterday, said: "At 9.30pm a man came across the defendant a short distance from the crashed car. He helped her home and she contacted the police to tell them about the crash. Police attended and she gave a positive breath test."

Rowe, of Common Road, Kerry, Newtown, had 138 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath – the drink-drive limit is 35 microgrammes.

She had admitted one charge of drink driving at a previous hearing.

Magistrates placed her under a 12-month community order with a supervision requirement, ordered her to complete a vehicle crime activity and disqualified her from driving for three years.

She was fined £100 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.
