Letter: How staff at hospital saved the day after dog walking fall
I frequently read articles/letters complaining about our local hospitals and the poor service offered, well I thought I would tell you about my recent experience at the Princess Royal Hospital.
On May 30 I had an accident while walking my dog, the dog decided to chase a cat and I ended up on the pavement!
At first I was aware that my shoulder was painful but went to bed thinking it was just bruised. At around 3am I woke up in agony and realised that I needed to go to hospital.
We arrived at PRH A&E department at around 3.30am. I did not have to wait long before being seen and was swiftly diagnosed with a dislocated and fractured right shoulder. After a couple of attempts to put back the dislocation it soon became obvious that I was going to need surgery. I asked how long this was likely to take and was told that I would be hopefully first on the list (I was in an awful lot of pain) at around 9am then I would be allowed home around 6 hours later.
It was at this moment that I burst into tears and told the staff that my daughter was getting married at 12 o'clock.
The wedding had been two years in the planning, I had made all the bridesmaids dresses and the wedding cake, and now it seemed I was not going to be there to support my daughter on her wedding day, I was devastated.
At around 8.30am an orthopaedic registrar came to see me and asked me when and where the wedding was. He said he was going to do everything in his power to make sure I got to the wedding! I rang home and arranged for my clothes to be brought to the hospital.
The staff both in theatre and on ward 10 were unbelievable. I woke from surgery at about 10am the doctor signed my discharge papers, I was whisked back to the ward where my sister was waiting with my clothes. I was showered, dressed, hair and make-up done by the amazing staff and at 11.38am I left the hospital and at 12 o'clock I was in Edgmond Church.
The treatment I received was first class. I cannot thank PRH enough they were truly amazing.
