Shropshire shows support for Armed Forces Day
Armed Forces Day was marked with events across the region, giving people the chance to remember and celebrate the role of those who defend our country.
Veterans came together for services of remembrance and there were also more light-hearted events designed to spread the word about the work of Britain's services.
A volley was fired at Newport Cemetery as part of a sombre event, with a procession ending with a service, in which prayers were said and a poppy wreath laid.
Elsewhere in the county, the Royal British Legion put on a fun day at its Church Stret base in Market Drayton as part of the national event.
Hundreds supported the event, visiting stalls and taking part in activities and entertainment, despite the drizzly weather.
British Legion chairman, Jack Mellor, said: It's been great so far, we've had quite a few people come down and get involved.
"We've got stalls from lots of people, the Women's section are here, and we've got entertainment too.
"We really need younger members to come along now, because we need more support from the town to keep going, and we'd love to see some younger people joining.
"Hopefully days like today will give us a bit of a push."
With a children's entertainer attending the day, the RBL are hoping they can get a whole host of people interested in the club, as well as the armed forces in general.
Mr Mellor said: "Everyone should support Armed Forces Day considering what they do for our country.
"Our town is built on the armed forces and we should be very proud of that."
Jim McIntosh, who attended the event with the Army Cadets, said: "We're having a great time, I always enjoy myself at these events.
"I spent 27 years in the army and 7 in the territorial army, so days like this are very important to me.
"I think it's been great so far, it's a shame about the weather, but we are still enjoying ourselves."
