Newport supermarket plans to be decided
A decision is set to be made today on plans to build two supermarkets in Newport.
Plans for Aldi and Lidl supermarkets are due to be discussed at a meeting of Telford & Wrekin Council's planning committee tonight.
German giant Aldi wants to open a new outlet in Audley Avenue at the former Focus DIY site with 110 parking spaces, which it claims will create up to 35 full and part-time jobs in the town.
Planning officers have recommended that this application be accepted as long as the supermarket makes financial contributions of £94,000 to make road improvements in the area and contributes £12,000 for a new bus stop, which the supermarket has already said it will do.
The application is close to where a High Court judge gave the go-ahead for a 33,000sq ft Morrisons store earlier this year, although the supermarket has since said it is reviewing its plans.
Meanwhile, discount giant Lidl will also learn the fate of its plans to open a new store at the Mere Park Garden Centre site, off Stafford Road - with planning officials recommending it be rejected.
The store would also have 82 car parking spaces and is expected to create 25 full-time and part-time jobs.
But planning officers say because the application will be on a greenfield site and due to poor access issues the plans should be rejected.
Both applications were being discussed at a planning meeting at 6pm tonight in Wellington.
Meanwhile, plans to build around 100 new homes in north Shropshire have been approved.
Proposals to build 65 homes in Morda, near Oswestry, 31 in Whitchurch and five in Cockshutt, near Ellesmere, were backed by Shropshire Council's North Planning Committee.
