Shoppers descended on the new shop in Shrewsbury, which has taken over the former Comet store on the town's Meole Brace Retail Park.

The finishing touches were made to the new store by staff just minutes before the doors opened at 10am yesterday.

The 30,000 sq ft store replaces a smaller unit which was being used on the retail park. It includes an extended lingerie department, homeware, women's, children's and men's departments and a Costa coffee outlet

Matt King, spokesman for Next, said: "The first day of trading was very promising with very brisk trade.

"There were about 100 people queuing at the time the store opened and it was very busy through the day.

"We are really pleased with how the first day went."

The 30,000 sq ft store has more than 50 members of staff, including a number who have transferred from the company's original store on the retail park.

The company also has a shop in the Pride Hill Shopping Centre in Shrewsbury and two stores in Telford.
