The 73-year-old victim remains at the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford with a broken hip after a robber pushed her to the ground in Madeley.

Owners of Andy's Fish and Chip Shop, on Park Street, where the woman had bought her dinner, today said they were "totally horrified" at the attack.

One of the chip shop owners, who asked not to be named, said: "Everyone here is absolutely mortified and totally horrified for her. It's disgusting.

"Our staff have been really upset at this happening to one of our customers.

"It's terrible that you can't even go for a bag of chips without fearing for your safety. The police have been and checked the CCTV to see if she was followed but we would urge anyone who saw anything to call police."

The robbery happened at around 5.30pm on Monday at the back of the community hall, near to Meadcroft.

The area was busy at the time, but the robber pushed the woman over and ran off with her handbag in the direction of Joseph Rich Avenue.

The pensioner was left with serious injuries and today remains at Princess Royal Hospital.

The offender was wearing a dark jacket, royal blue coloured hooded top, dark bottoms and trainers. No other description is known.

The victim's black leather handbag, beige purse, keys, credit cards and mobile phone are yet to be recovered.

Detective Inspector Billy Scott said: "This is a lady who lives in the area and walks everywhere. She had just collected her tea from the local fish and chip shop and was walking home when she was attacked.

"Her bag may have been discarded nearby and I ask for the public to look out for it.

"It was also early evening with many people around and coming home from work.

"If somebody saw this man running away or hanging around the area before the incident, I ask them to come forward.

"This is a horrendous offence. We need the public's help to identify him."

Police are anxious to identify the offender and ask for anyone who has information to call them on 101, quoting incident number 533S of Monday, July 7.
