Age no barrier to Newport artist

He may be 97 - but age is proving no barrier to evergreen Don Briggs, who has been busy painting works of art which will be the star attraction at an upcoming summer fair.

Mr Briggs has finished four paintings which will take pride of place on show at a summer fair at Beamaris Court care home in Newport on Saturday.

The World War Two veteran only started painting when he was 79 and says it is something he does for fun and enjoyment.

The fair on Saturday will Claire Fishlock, from the care home, said: " Don started painting when he was 79 years old.

He classes himself as, not an artist, but someone who just enjoys painting.

"He always paints landscapes of places he is had been too or from pictures of other people's travels.

"We are very much hoping people will come and support our event."

The fair on Saturday will run from 2pm to 4.30pm will feature a range of stalls with residents displaying their crafts, home grown plants, a tombola and a cake stall.

Mr Briggs, a World War Two veteran who served for six years, has painted four works especially for the event which will be on display when the home on Beaumaris Road opens its doors this weekend.
