Powys residents rewarded for efforts
Two tireless Powys residents have been recognised for their services to the local community by being presented with special awards at the Royal Welsh Show.
Ken Astley from Llanfair Caereinion and Eileen Jehu from Newtown have been presented with a Silver Kite Award by the Chairman of Powys County Council, Councillor Roche Davies.
Mr Astley - better known to some of his community's children as Father Christmas - was born and brought up in Rhiwhiraeth, Llanfair Caereinion.
Having served as a town councillor since 1974, he was also a founder member of the committee setting-up and running the community centre.
Mr Davies said: "Ken is an active member of the Montgomeryshire vintage tractor club and leads local tractor run each year, raising hundreds of pounds for charities. Every Christmas he is to be found in his grotto in the public institute, and usually sees 70 to 80 children to chat and hand out presents.
"He is always ready to assist and support everything connected with Llanfair Caereinion and district, and supported always by his wife Kay."
Mrs Jehu was presented with her award for her work as a volunteer for Northside Residents Association for the past 12 years.
She starting volunteering for the association shortly after it was formed and has been secretary ever since. Although now taking a step back from her role, she will continue to support the association.
Mr Davies said: "During her time with the association Eileen has helped achieve many enhancements to local estates. She has also helped organize a wide range of activities at the community hall. She has helped raise awareness of working with local representatives to improve highways, drainage, public transport and the local environment. She also volunteers as treasurer and secretary of the local leg club."
The awards were presented at the Royal Welsh Show in Builth Wells earlier this week.
