The Swan, in Bridgnorth High Street, has been sold to a private buyer by the Charnwood Pub Company.

New owner Gregory Hipkiss, who lives in the town, said he planned to keep much of the building and trade the same.

But all members of staff are expected to lose their jobs following the takeover.

Mr Hipkiss said: "We do not intend to change very much but we do intend to carry out a refurbishment.

"The pub will remain as a pub and restaurant in the town. It's a lovely building.

"We were attracted by the location and because it's an asset to the town.

"We expect to change contracts in the next two weeks and then we can begin work, which will include a change of staff."

The Grade II-listed pub has survived two major fires during its history and has been a landmark in the town centre for centuries.

Shane Holland, a director at Shifnal-based Charnwood, said: "We can confirm The Swan has been sold but we're not sure what it will be used for at the moment.

"Our understanding is it will remain some sort of drinking and eating establishment.

"The pub was not for sale but eventually the offer became too good to turn down.

"I run a small company and when someone keeps coming back it gets to such a price where you can't turn it down."

The company, which also owns The Chequers Inn, in Leominster, took over The Swan in 2008.

Mr Holland said despite the sale Bridgnorth remained a great town to trade in.

He said: "Turnover at the pub had been going well up until the sale and the pub was doing well.

"The site will not close but will be transferred over."
