Kids get to take part in Market Drayton cricket camp.

Could the next Alistair Cook or Ian Bell have graced the turf of a cricket ground in Shropshire this week? Well organisers of a youth summer camp certainly hope so.

Over the past four days children from all over north Shropshire have been flocking in their droves to Market Drayton Cricket Club to hone their skills.

Children ages seven to 13 have been given the opportunity to take part in specialist net coaching and playing matches against each other.

As well as being fun for the children, organisers from the club hope these children will one day become the future of Shropshire cricket and maybe even the England team.

Jonathan Caldecott, chairman and head coach of the club said: "These guys that have come here for the four days are making history in the town because this is the very first occasion Market Drayton have ever had a junior camp - and it has been smashing.

"These are our future, if we don't have younger people then the clubs will eventually fail and fall.

"This is why we wanted to get as many kids into the sport by giving them these fun sessions and an opportunity to get cricket and some of these kids have now got the bug and want to really get stuck in to the sport.

"I want to see these kids maybe one day wearing the Three Lions and playing for England."

As well as coaches giving sessions from Market Drayton Cricket Club, there have also been sessions from coaches with Shropshire Cricket Board Chris Dirkin and Ed Ashline.

The summer camp follows the setting up for the first time of a youth system at Market Drayton where the club now has an under sevens, under 11s and under 13s team, which all compete in the Staffordshire leagues.

Sarah Coggins, a level two coach at the club said: "While here the children have been given special sessions on wicket keeping, spin bowling, sweep batting, front foot batting and a variety of other techniques, and maybe some of these will join the youth set up.

"It has been a great few days and we have had great weather and everyone has had a really good time form the children right through to the coaches."
