Shrewsbury's Shirehall still not on market

Shropshire Council has confirmed it still wants to sell its headquarters at Shirehall – but has not yet put the offices on the market.

Council leader Keith Barrow said the council would consider offers for the building and that the "intention has always been to sell".

But he said no decisions had yet been made and that an offer would only be accepted if the circumstances were right for the authority.

It comes a year after the council's chief executive Clive Wright said the authority was looking to sell off Shirehall as part of as part of measures to cut a further £80 million from the authority's budget.

And last October Councillor Barrow said that following the sell-off council workers would be moving to other buildings around the county and some could be asked to work from home.

He said that officials were also exploring the possibility of holding council meetings in the Walker Theatre at Shrewsbury's Theatre Severn once Shirehall was vacated.

The council wants to make 1,700 redundancies, many of which are posts based at the authority's headquarters. Rumours had resurfaced in the past few days that Shirehall was on the open market.

But Councillor Barrow said: "Shirehall has never been marketed for sale and it is not currently on the market.

"However, we are committed to making the best use of the council's properties and we will consider any offers that are made.

"The intention has always been to sell when – and indeed if – the circumstances were right for us as an authority to do so."
