The cottage, which was valued at £149,000, has stood empty since April's killing and will now be knocked down.

Five-year-old April's killer Mark Bridger lived at the rented Mount Pleasant cottage in Ceinws, near Machynlleth, when he abducted and murdered her in October 2012.

Although April's body has never been found, small fragments of her skull were found in the home's fireplace by forensic officers following her abduction outside her home on the town's Bryn y Gog estate.

Coral and Paul Jones, April's parents, said the news lifted a "huge weight" off their shoulders.

Mrs Jones said: "The Welsh Government has bought the house in Machynlleth connected to the death of our daughter April.

"This is a huge weight off our minds as it can now be demolished. The loss of our beautiful daughter was bad enough, but the house has been a constant reminder of the tragic events.

"Our family want to thank the Welsh Government for listening to us and for understanding our need to see the house demolished."

Bridger 48, abducted April at about 7pm on October 1, 2012, while she played on her bike with friends.

Glyn Davies, Montgomeryshire MP, welcomed the news, saying: "I welcome Welsh Government's decision to purchase and demolish Mark Bridger's house, which shows sensitivity to April Jones's family and all those who gave their time and effort to search for her after she disappeared.

"This house witnessed a truly horrific act, which appalled the world."
