Actor John Challis has called plans for a 43-acre "solar park" at Whitton, near Ludlow "bloody madness" and has thrown his weight behind the Save South Shropshire Countryside campaign, which is also protesting against plans for sites near Church Stretton, Bridgnorth and Cleobury Mortimer.

The group, which started when objectors to the Whitton plans joined forces with those against a 54-acre solar farm at Acton Scott, has now doubled in size.

Mr Challis tweeted: "NO, NO and thrice times NO to a solar panel farm at Witton. Bloody madness."

Speaking to the Shropshire Star, he added: "It's just disfiguring the countryside for massive profit, it's appalling."
