The householder was cleaning the barbeque when the gas flame caused the blaze in Oakengates at 11.45am.

Fire crews from Wellington and Telford brought the incident under control in 30 minutes.

Incident commander Guy Williams said there had been no question of firefighters downing tools when the midday strike came into force.

"Firefighters acted competely responsiblity as they all would," Mr Williams said.

"The incident involved the one gas cyclinder was dealt with and a second one was cooled down by crews.

"The fire spread to a garden shed and to guttering and windows of the house," he said.

Mr Williams said that, particularly with the winds picked up this afternoon, anyone planning a barbeque should take extra care.

"Embers will fly off in high winds," he said.

He said gas implements should be thoroughly checked before turning on and said no barbeque should be left unattended.
