It broke out just after 6.30pm yesterday, on land at Wrockwardine, near the Wrekin.
Crews had to deal with high winds fanning the flames which leaped high into the sky and could be seen for many miles. The straw bales had been stacked in a row, 100 metres by 10 metres, leading to a wall of flame.
Firefighters from Wellington got the blaze under control in just over half an hour.
"The crews were able to prevent the fire spreading to a nearby hedge," a spokesman said. Two crews remained at the scene through the night amid fears the the winds from ex-hurricane Bertha could spark the fire back into life.
